Wild Nights with Emily (2018): Molly Shannon’s Interpretation of Poet Emily Dickinson as Lesbian

In Wild Nights with Emily, Molly Shannon plays the famous 19th century poet Emily Dickinson, a figure celebrated in books and plays, as the opposite of a lonely recluse.

Madeleine Olnek’s comedy depicts Dickinson as a more confident romantic than has been the norm, offering a modernist interpretation in tune with our times.

In the tale, between composing volumes of poetry, Dickinson falls in love with her childhood best friend Susan (Susan Ziegler), only to have her true identity erased by a meddling acquaintance (Amy Seimetz), acting as her posthumous publisher.

“Wild Nights With Emily” world premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Fest.

Shannon and the director are long-time friends from the times they had attended NYU Drama School.
