When We Were Kings: Leon Gast’s Oscar Winning Docu

Made by the veteran documentarian Leon Gast, “When We Were Kings,” picked up both the Golden Globe and the Oscar Award for best documentary.

The documentary depicts the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

The fight was held in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) on October 30, 1974.

The film features a number of celebrities, including James Brown, Jim Brown, B.B. King, Norman Mailer, George Plimpton, Spike Lee and Thomas Hauser.

Released in 1996 to strong reviews, it and won the 1996 Best Documentary Feature Oscar.

It took Gast 22 years to edit and finance the documentary before it was finally released
