Despite competition from two similarly targeted films in the marketplace, Paramount exceeded expectations with the weekend’s top two performers: “Paranormal Activity 2” and “Jackass 3D.”
Paranormal 2: Biggest Opening of Horror Flick
“Paranormal 2” took in an impressive $41.5 million from 3,216 runs, making it the biggest opening ever for a horror picture, beating the $40.6 million three-day gross of Warner’s 2009 redo “Friday the 13th.”
Paramount’s horror sequel also far outstripped its predecessor, which posted $21.1 million during its initial wide expansion the same weekend last year.
“Paranormal 2” screened at 151 Imax locations, with the format contributing an estimated $2.5 million for a solid per-screen average of $17,000.
Meanwhile, “Jackass 3D” came off a record-setting debut, with $21.6 million in its sophomore session. The 3D picture held steady, dropping just 57%, which marks a solid hold given its core younger audience typically turns out opening weekend.
