Call it the Hamilton Effect
The ongoing hype over Broadway smash hit Hamilton helped boost the 2016 Tony Awards to the show’s highest overnight rating in 15 years, growing 33% from last year.
The CBS telecast averaged a 6.8/11 in overnight metered markets, up from last year’s 5.1/8, which was one of the least-watched in the show’s history.
The show notched a 1.6 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic (up 60% from last year) and 8.7 million viewers, marking its largest audience since 2001.
The fan-favorite Hamilton scoop the prize for Best Musical, as expected, winning 11 awards overall.
The Best Play winner The Humans received four trophies in total.
National ratings will be available later today.
