Focus Features has acquired North American rights to the drama Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter.
Sarah Gavron directed the drama from a script written by Abi Morgan. Focus is planning a Fall 2015 domestic release.
The film, inspired by the early 20th century campaign for the right of women to vote, centers on Mulligan’s character, a working wife and mother, who bands together with other women from all walks of life to fight for the right to vote. Ben Whishaw, Anne-Marie Duff and BrendanGleeson also star.
Focus has also acquired the distribution rights for Latin America, India, South Korea and most of Eastern Europe, including Russia; Universal Pictures International will release the film in those territories. Pathe is handling international sales on the project.
The deal was negotiated by Focus Features’ Beth Lemberger, executive vp business affairs, andLia Buman, president of acquisitions, with Cameron McCracken, managing director at Pathe Productions, and Muriel Sauzay, head of sales at Pathe International.
