Written and directed by Hagar Ben-Asher, The Slut (“Ha-Notenet” in Hebrew), an intimate Israeli melodrama, world premiered at the 2011 Critics Week of the Cannes Film Fest.
The tale centers on a promiscuous single mother named Tamar from a secluded village, who finds her sordid lifestyle challenged by a stranger who shows her a more meaningful human bond.
Tamar resides in a tiny rural hamlet with her two daughters. With no husband for her sexual desires, she seeks fulfillment through one-night stands.
Her situation changes, when she meets Shai, a handsome man engaged in settling his late mother’s estate. Tamar and Shai develop a bond that goes beyond the physical, with the lonely mother realizing that random sex with strangers is no substitute for genuine love.
The duo then embarks on a new phase in life where emotional fulfillment takes precedence over instant physical gratification.
A chamber piece for two, The Slut feels like a promising first feature.
