Pineapple Express: Most Popular Dope Comedy

August 7, 2008–Sony’s R-rated comedy “Pineapple Express” opened to a record-breaking $12.5 million on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record held by the the $8.5 million opening of “The Princess Diaries 2” when it opened on Wednesday, back in August 2004.

The dope comedy-actioner “Pineapple Express,” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, was produced by Judd Apatow, Hollywood’s King of Comedy.

Younger girls turned out in groups for Warner’s “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2,” which also opened on Wednesday. The sequel grossed $5.8 million on Wednesday, while the first “Sisterhood” grossed $9 million over its entire opening weekend.

“Sisterhood 2” reteams the stars of the first picture, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn and Blake Lively, adding some older actresses to the cast, including Blythe Danner.
