Oscar 2019: Best Actor–Predictions

No matter which nine or ten films will be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, there will be greater diversity and inclusion this year than ever before.

If you want to know more about the Oscars, please consult my book, All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards (hardcover and paperback).

FRONTRUNNERS (in alphabetical order)

Christian Bale, Vice

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Ethan Hawke, First Reformed

Viggo Mortensen, Green Book

Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody

John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman

Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate

Ryan Gosling, First Man

Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased or Ben Is Back (great year for the young actor)

Steve Carell, Beautiful Boy

Hugh Jackman, The Frontrunner

Robert Redford, The Old Man & the Gun

John C. Reilly, Stan & Ollie

Of the nine actors enlisted in the two top categories, only one is an Oscar-winner (Christian Bale, The Fighter, but in the supporting category).  Six of the nine have been nominated before, some multiple times, like Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe.

Fresh faces, if nominated: Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).

From Supporting Actors to Best Actors:

It’s good and healthy to see gifted actors, such as Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, being cast and recognized for roles in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor categories.

Also in the Run Category:

All four actors have been nominated before: Steve Carell, Hugh Jackman, Robert Redford, and John C. Reilly (the latter in the Supporting Actor league, for the 2002 Chicago).
