Modern Romance

Modern Romance, Brooks' second film, reworks the formula of boy-loses-girl-boy-wins-girl. Brooks plays a neurotic film editor, obsessively devoted to Mary Harvard (Kathryn Harrold), but unable to build a normal relationship. Full with theories about what relationships should be, he hardly looks at the girl he first kicks out, then furiously pursues.

Alternately irritating and hilarious, the film brims with in-jokes about filmmaking, but is ultimately disappointing .
