Sony Classics has acquired domestic and some international distribution rights to Maggie’s Plan.
The comedy, which debuted at the Toronto Film Fest, centers on a single Brooklyn woman (Greta Gerwig), who considers having a child via a sperm donation when she enters into an affair with a married college professor (Ethan Hawke). Julianne Moore plays the wife — the third wheel in a love triangle.
Rebecca Miller (“Personal Velocity”) directed the film and wrote the script based on a story by Karen Rinaldi.
The movie was produced by Rachael Horovitz, Damon Cardasis and Miller. Executive producers included Philip Stephenson and Temple Williams of Freedom Media, Lucy Barzun Donnelly and Alexandra Kerry of Locomotive, and Michael J. Mailis and Susan Wrubel of Hyperion Media.
Sony Pictures Classics, which had success buying the Oscar-winning Still Alice at last year’s fest, prevailed. In addition to North American rights, the studio has nabbed distribution in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Hungary, Romania, China and various other Asian territories.
Miller said she was “thrilled” the distributor had landed her film, hailing Sony Pictures Classics as “an iconic company.”
Maggie’s Plan will also screen at the upcoming New York Film Fest.
