The first trailer for The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, has been released. The picture hits theaters on September 2.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines), the film is based on the debut novel by M.L. Stedman, set at an isolated lighthouse on the Western Australian coast after World War I.
Fassbender’s and Vikander’s characters find happiness when they informally adopt a baby girl who has washed up in a lifeboat. But several years later, the girl’s mother (Rachel Weisz) appears, explaining that she lost her baby and husband at sea around the same time.
“She does not belong to us,” Fassbender tells his wife in the trailer. “We can’t keep her.”
DreamWorks acquired the movie rights to the novel in 2012, with Harry Potter’s David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford producing. Participant Media co-produced the film, which was shot in Australia in 2014.
The Light Between Oceans is the final DreamWorks title to be released by Disney under the five-year output agreement.
Vikander is nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for The Danish Girl, while Fassbender is up for best actor for Steve Jobs Sunday night. Weisz won the best actress Oscar for 2005’s The Constant Gardener.
