Johnny Come Lately (1943): Jimmy Cagney as Crusading Reporter in Newspaper Melodrama

In William S. Howard’s Johnny Come Lately, Jimmy Cagney plays a reporter hired by a paper owned by an widow (Grace George) to lead a crusade against corrupt officials.

The film is based on a workable scenario by John Van Druten in what was the first feature made by Cagney’s production company (run by his brother, William Cagney).

The secondary cast includes Marjorie Main, Margaret Hamilton, and Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel.
