Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Tops Box-Office

Paramount’s “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” opened with $12.6 million yesterday at the domestic box office and is well on its way toward an expected $30 million bow.

That estimate is double  what the studio paid to produce the film, a reported $15 million, which looks great for Par in spite of opening far short of its predecessor. “Jackass 3D” bowed to $50.4 million in 2010, albeit with the benefit of 3D surcharges adding to its gross.

Thus “Bad Grandpa” will unseat “Gravity” this frame, which held the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weekends. And even still, the space drama will be jarred only slightly off course with $6.2 million from Friday and an anticipated three-day total of about $20 million, off 33% from last week.

“Gravity” has accumulated $185.7 million at the domestic box office, and more than $300 million worldwide.

Fox bowed “The Counselor” Friday, an R-rated thriller counter”-programmer to Paramount’s R-rated comedy, to $3.1 million. Though “Counselor” is struggling with critics and is now only expected to make between $8 million and $10 million this frame, it has stronger prospects overseas, casting stars with proven international appeal. It launches day-and-date in just five international markets.
