WestEnd Films has acquired worldwide rights to Flammable Children, a comedy written and to be directed by Stephan Elliott, who was BAFTA nominated for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
The cast is led by Guy Pearce, who starred in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Radha Mitchell.
The film is set in an Australian beach suburb, Dee Why, in the mid-1970s. Fourteen-year-old Jeff tries to find his feet in a world changing faster than his hormones, and deal with his crush on shy and sensitive girl-next-door Melly. When the town suddenly hits the spotlight after the body of a 200-ton whale is washed ashore, Jeff and Melly think it’s the biggest thing that ever happened in their lives.
Their eccentric parents are catching up with the sexual revolution that has also hit Australia’s beaches, but it’s about to go spectacularly wrong.
“This is the film of the period that defined me. Wonderfully wrong, completely endearing, and unintentionally hilarious,” Elliott said.
Flammable Children, now in pre-production, will shoot in the autumn.
Produced by Al Clark and Jamie Hilton, the film reunites several of Elliott’s collaborators on “Priscilla” besides Pearce, including producer Clark, Oscar-nominated production designer Colin Gibson (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Oscar-winning costume designer Lizzy Gardiner (“Mission: Impossible II”), BAFTA-nominated score composer Guy Gross (“Knowing”) and Emmy Award nominated editor Sue Blainey (“Lost”).
