Oscar 2018: Best Actress Race–Predictions

Best Actress Category:

This years, female performers don’t have much to complain about.  In fact, the Best Actress race is far more crowded and competitive, filled with Oscar-caliber turn than the Best Actor field.

I have divided 12 strong female performances into three categories, each arranged alphabetically.

Incidentally, this is the 31st year that I have been doing Oscar predictions, ever since my book, All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards, was first published, in 1987.

Featuring on its cover Halle Berry, the first black woman to ever win the Best Actress Oscar, in 2001, the book (updated every sic year) is now in its 11th edition.

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water

Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird

Meryl Streep, The Post

Kate Winslet, Wonder Wheel

Vicky Krieps, Phantom Thread

Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game

Judi Dench, Victoria and Abdul

Margot Robbie, I, Tonya

Also in the Run:

Nicole Kidman, The Beguiled

Diane Kruger, In the Fade (Germany’s entry into Best Foreign Lingo Oscar)

Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes

Half of this group of talented women have already won an Oscar, including Streep (3 Oscars) McDormand, Kidman, Winslet, Stone, and Dench.

Most of the women have already been nominated for an Oscar, either in the lead and/or supporting category, including Hawkins (2 nominations, one lead, the other supporting), Ronan (also 2 nominations), and Chastain.

But there may be one or two new faces if Vicky Krieps or Margot Robbie get a lead nomination.
