Chappie: Disappointing Sci-Fi from Neill Blomkamp

Sony Pictures’ “Chappie” looks to be the strongest of the new releases in what’s expected to be a weak weekend at the box-office.

The film, which cost $49 million to make, centers on a police droid that learns to think and feel.

It’s an offbeat science-fiction adventure from Neill Blomkamp, the director of “District 9″ and “Elysium.”

In addition to the lovable robot, Patel, Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman are on hand to lend some Homo sapiens support.

The film should $20 million when it debuts on more than 3,200 screens, but Sony is predicting a debut in the $15 million to $16 million range.
