February 2, 2019–Javier Fesser’s Champions won the best picture kudo at the 33rd Goya Awards (Spain’s Oscars).
Spain’s Oscar entry is a blockbuster hit domestically, earning €18.5 million (or $21.1 million) and sold near worldwide.
The comedy centers on an off-the-rails Spanish coach sentenced to train a basketball team of special-needs players.
The film had won three of its 10 nominations, including breakthrough actor (Jesús Vidal) and song (Coque Malla’s “Este es el momento”).
The Realm
Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Realm, a political thriller, was the other big winner of Saturday night, sweeping most awards, including actor (Antonio de la Torre), original screenplay (Isabel Peña, Rodrigo Sorogoyen), and original score (Olivier Arson), among a total seven Goyas .
