Cave, The: Feras Fayyad’s Oscar Nominated Documentary

Feras Fayyad directed The Cave, a timely, hard-hitting Syrian non-fictional feature, which is nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar.

The film world premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Fest, where it won the People’s Choice Award for Best Documentary.

A companion piece to his 2017 film, Last Men in Aleppo, The Cave centers on Amani Ballour, a female doctor in Ghouta who is operating a makeshift hospital in a cave during the Syrian Civil War.

Fayyad’s goal in making the film was to create evidence that could be used to seek justice for innocent victims of the civil war: “The film should put people in an uncomfortable position to look through the terrible reality around us.”

Indeed, The Cave poses urgent questions, for which it doesn’t pretend to have easy answers.
