Carmen (1984) by Francesco Rossi

Francesco Rossi is the latest director to be intrigued by the cinematic potential of composer Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, Carmen, the colorful, sensual cigarette factory worker whose flirtations with the soldier Don Jos are forgotten in her love for the matador Escamillo.

The movie is cast by internationally famous opera singers: Placido Domingo sings the part of Don Jos, Julia Migenes-Johnson is Carmen, and Ruggero Raimondi is Escamillo.

Carmen received the 1984 Cesar award for “Best Sound.”

A year earlier, Spanish director Carlos Saura made a version of Carmen, which was nominated for the Best Foreign Lnguage Oscar.
