Inspired by true events, the timely political melodrama Burden was written and directed by Andrew Heckler.

The film stars Garrett Hedlund, Forest Whitaker, Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wilkinson, Tess Harper, and Usher.

World premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Fest, it won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award, but the feature did not get theatrical distribution until 2020.

Garrett Hedlund plays Mike Burden, an orphan raised within the Ku Klux Klan who attempts to break away when his lover (Andrea Riseborough) urges him to leave for a better life together.

When the Klan seeks Mike out for vengeance, a black Baptist church congregation led by Reverend Kennedy (Forest Whitaker), agree to protect Mike, his girlfriend and her son.
