Bourne Ultimatum: Most Successful Chapter of Spy Franchise

August 4, 2007–Paul Greengrass’ “The Bourne Ultimatum” made about $24.5 million in domestic ticket sales on Friday from 3,660 runs, outperforming the opening day performance of the previous two installments in Universal’s spy franchise, which began in 2002.

Bowing on July 23, 2004, “The Bourne Supremacy” saw an opening day take of $18.4 million and a weekend take of $52.5 million. “The Bourne Identity,” opening on June 14, 2002, made $8.7 million on its first day and $27.1 million for the weekend.

Coming in second was Fox’s holdover “The Simpsons Movie,” which made an estimated $8.1 million on Friday from 3,926 locations for a cume of $111.1 million. Pic, now in its second frame, dropped 74% from its opening day, in line with declines for several of the summer’s other best openers.

Among other wide new entrants, Disney’s live-action kiddie pic “Underdog,” based on the 1960s cartoon series, made $4.1 million on Friday from 3,013 locations. Paramount’s comedy “Hot Rod” made an estimated $2 million from 2,607 runs.

Lionsgate’s “Bratz,” based on the doll line, took in an estimated $1.7 million on Friday from 1,509 runs.

Jennifer Lopez-Marc Anthony-starrer biopic of Hector Lavoe, “El Cantante,” from Picturehouse, made $1 million from 542 locales in select markets.
