Beauty and the Dogs: Tounisian Chronicle of Rape and Its Aftermath

In Beauty and the Dogs, switching from documentary mode to narrative fiction, Tunisian female director Kaouther Ben Hania tells a fact-based story.

The subject could not have been timelier. The protagonist is a woman (Mariam Al Ferjani) who, having been raped by local policemen, faces a major challenge: To Tell or Not To Tell the police about the crime.

Original in structure and style, the tense and intense chronicle unfolds during one tumultuous night, which is divided into chapters, with each consisting of a single shot.

End result is an emotionally powerful tale that many viewers–especially women–could relate to on both visceral and cerebral levels.
