Back to the Future Part II (1989): Inferior Sequel, Oscar Nominated for Visual Effects

Back to the Future Part II (1989)

Universal (Amblin Entertainment)

The sequel to “Back ro the Future,” made four years earlier, is inferior in every way to the original, but still offers some fun.

The cast is the same, except for Elizabeth Shue, who replaced Claudia Wells in the role of Michael J. Fox’s girlfriend.

This picture was nominated for the Visual Effects Oscar, due to the innovative use of multiple images.  In one scene, Fox plays no less than four roles on screen: Young Marty McFly, middle-aged Marty, Marty’s son, and even Marty’s daughter.

Oscar Nominations: 1

Sound Effects: Ken Ralston, Michael Lantieri, John Bell, and Steve Gawley

Oscar Context

The visual Effects Oscar went to James Cameron’s “The Abyss.”
