In AWOL, Deb Shoval’s romantic melodrama about first love, Lola Kirke (“Mistress America”) plays Joey, an aimless young woman searching for identity, self-esteem, and direction in her small, rural Pennsylvania town.
Things change when Lola meets and falls in love with Rayna (Breeda Wool), a rough and tumble housewife neglected by her husband, embarking on an exciting, totally unanticipated journey.
Marked by two impressive lead performances and a strong supporting cast, AWOL is an unusual romantic drama that is both tender and tough in equal measure.
AWOL, based on Shoval’s short of the same title, premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Fest.
