War, A: Denmark’s Nominee for the Best Foreign Language Oscar

In 2014, Danish Tobias Lindholm, 38, shared writing credits with Thomas Vinterberg on The Hunt, which was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

This year, he is Oscar nominated solo for A War, his third film as writer-director, a study of an upstanding army commander (played by “Game of Thrones” star Pilou Asbaek) tried for war crimes on his return from Afghanistan.  The film balances military and legal politics with complex conflicts in the domestic arena.

A War boasts the same procedural detail that distinguished Lindholm’s previous film, A Hijacking, a Somali pirate thriller that bears resemblance to Captain Phillips.
