Golden Globes 2013: Six-Year High Rating

January 14, 2013–The Golden Globes live telecast on NBC hit a six-year high in the overnight ratings Sunday, dominating its timeslot and rising more than 10% vs. last year.

Likely boosted by buzz surrounding the Academy Awards nominations just a few days earlier, the “70th Annual Golden Globe Awards” averaged a 13.1 household rating/28 share in Nielsen’s metered markets–up nicely from last year’s 11.7/18. It’s the top overnight score for the Globes since the 2007 telecast (on a Monday) netted a 16.0/23.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, the “Golden Globes” rose 23% from last year in adults 18-49 (7.6/19 vs. 6.2/16) for the best demo performance for the kudocast in the five years that NBC has been tracking the category.

Last year’s show averaged a 5.0/12 in 18-49 and 16.85 million viewers overall, so there’s a good shot at this year’s telecast to move above 18 million viewers for the first time since the 2007 show drew 20 million.

The preliminary affiliate-based national estimates that Nielsen typically produces by 11 a.m. ET are deemed unreliable today as they don’t accurately reflect West Coast viewing. The “Golden Globe Awards” were once again aired both live and on a three-hour tape delay in markets including Los Angeles and San Francisco, the early numbers don’t include the first telecast.

NBC was expected to produce time zone-adjusted preliminary estimates from Nielsen later Monday morning.

From 7 to 8 p.m., the “Golden Globes Red Carpet Special 2013” averaged a 4.8 household rating/7 share in the overnights, up 26% from last year’s 3.8/6,

On the competition Sunday, ABC’s dramas “Once Upon a Time” (2.8/7 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) and “Revenge” (2.0/4 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) were down from their winter premieres of last week and at season-low levels.

CBS had a big NFL overrun, so its numbers are subject to revision. From 9 to 11 in the prelims, “The Good Wife” averaged a 1.9/4 in 18-49 and 10.0 million viewers overall — nearly catching “Revenge” in the 18-49 demo — and “The Mentalist” followed with a 2.0/5 in the demo and 10.4 million viewers overall.

Fox was led by original episodes of and “Family Guy” (3.1/7 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall), “The Simpsons” (2.46 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) and “American Dad” (2.4/5 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall).
