In Between: Promising Debut of Arab-Israeli Female Director Maysaloun Hamoud

IN BETWEEN, Arab-Israeli female director Maysaloun Hamoud’s taboo-breaking debut feature, is about three young Palestinian women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv, and try to find a balance between the contradictions of modern life and their conservative traditional culture.
Laila (Mouna Hawa), is a criminal lawyer who loves to burn off her workday stress in the underground club scene. Salma (Sana Jammelieh,) is a DJ and bartender who starts a romantic relationship with a female medical intern.
Their new roommate Nur (Shaden Kanboura, Sand Storm), is a younger, religious Muslim university student whose conservative fiancé is horrified by her secular roommates and asks her to hasten their marriage, leave Tel Aviv, and assume her role as a dutiful wife. Laila and Salma also face their own turmoil.
Laila has found love with a modern Muslim man whose acceptance proves less than unconditional, and Salma discovers that her Christian family is not as liberal as they claim to be.

IN BETWEEN is an astute and nuanced critique of the balancing act between tradition and modernity, citizenship and culture, fealty and freedom.  The film shows the bond between three strong women of a younger generation who are under threat from the same socio-political-cultutal conditions

Writer-director Maysaloun Hamoud was born in Budapest and grew up in Dier Hanna, a village in northern Israel. After graduating with a master’s degree in history from the University of Jerusalem, she went on to study filmmaking at Tel Aviv’s Minshar School of Art, graduating with distinction.
