Lars von Trier has broken his self-imposed vow of silence to share some bittersweet news.
The Danish director is now clean and sober as he undergoes treatment for drugs and alcohol addiction, according to The Guardian.
The helmer behind “Nymphomaniac” implied that he may quit filmmaking altogether as he wrote almost all of his films under the influence. He now attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings daily, which he fears means that he can only produce “s—ty films.”
“I don’t know if I can make any more films, and that worries me,” he said. “There is no creative expression of artistic value that has ever been produced by ex-drunkards and ex-drug-addicts. Who the hell would bother with a Rolling Stones without booze or with a Jimi Hendrix without heroin?”
Von Trier told the paper that drinking a bottle of vodka daily helped him enter a “parallel world” necessary for creation. He said he completed the screenplay for 2003’s “Dogville” during a 12-day drug binge. In comparison, it took him a year and a half to write the script for the two-part sex odyssey “Nymphomaniac” while sober.
This was the director’s first major interview since a self-imposed vow of silence following comments he made in 2011 expressing empathy for Adolf Hitler.
