Monicelli, Mario: Italian Master

Italian director Mario Monicelli receives a retrospective at the 2008 San Sebastian Film Fest, which runs September 18-27.

Monicelli’s tribute will consist of 41 films reflecting eight-decade career, with such acclaimed films as Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) and the WWI film The Great War (1959).

The tribute will also include the 92-year-old helmers latest picture, The Roses of the Desert, made in 2006.

Monicelli, whose Big Deal on Madonna Street won a San Sebastian Silver Shell along with Hitchcock’s Vertigo, in 1958, made his first short, “I ragazzi della Via Paal” in 1935.
