Assays, Olivier–French Filmmaker, Regular Presence at Cannes Film Fest

Cult French director Olivier Assayas made in 2014 his English-language debut with Clouds of Sils Maria, an intriguing, multi-layered, female melodrama, boasting strong performances from vet French actress Juliette Binoche and two young American thesps, Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz.

The film was the last to be shown in competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Fest, where it received its world premiere.

IFC Films, which pre-bought the film early on, will release it in the U.S..

Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) stars as Maria Enders, a famous actress who is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago.  But while back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who drives the older Helena to suicide, she’s now being asked to step into the role of Helena.

Assayas previously had three films competing at Cannes:

“Les destinees” in 2000

“Demonlover” in 2002

“Clean” in 2004, for which Maggie Cheung (then wife) won the Actress kudo.

Assayas also presented the epic crime gangster, Carlos, out of competition in 2010.
