Nicco Annan, P-Valley (Starz)
Annan’s appearance in Katori Hall’s Mississippi Delta strip-club drama was impressive. Annan originated the role in her stage play Pussy Valley–the long theatrical experience with the character helped the actor make Uncle Clifford the fully inhabited heart of the TV adaptation. Uncle Clifford identifies as non-binary and uses she/her pronouns. Witness the immaculate beard, the well-kept nails, the teetering heels.
Her rich part is equal parts mother and father (similar in many ways to Jennifer Lopez’s role in Hustlers) to the diverse dancers, each with an interesting backstory and personality–at The Pynk.
P-Valley is essentially an ensemble-driven show, and all members of the cast–relative unknowns and familiar figures like Loretta Devine or Isaiah Washington–contribute their share to the series overall impact.
