Tony Awards 2008: Whoopi Goldberg Is Emcee

May 8, 2008–Whoopi Goldberg will be the emcee the 2008 Tony Awards, a departure in format from the previous two years which had no single host. Goldberg announced the news Thursday on her daytime show, The View.

The Tonys have not had a single host since 2005, when Hugh Jackman emceed for the third time in a row.

Goldberg had emceed the Oscars four times. She also is a Rialto producer with an upcoming revival of For Colored Girls… in the works.

Her Broadway credits as an actor include Ma Raineys Black Bottom (2003) and a replacement stint in the 1996 revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, along with solo shows in 1984 and 2004. She also was a producer of Tony-winning 2002 tuner Thoroughly Modern Millie.
