Oct 4, 2008–Three Latin American companies are adapting Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez's narco epic “Noticias de un secuestro” (News of a Kidnapping) for the bigscreen.
The novel depicts the kidnapping and eventual release of prominent figures in Marquez's native Colombia by drug lord Pablo Escobar's infamous Medellin Cartel in the early 1990s.
Co-produced by Mexico's Argos Comunicacion, Colombia's Caracol TV and Costa Films of Argentina, the project was announced at the Latin American Culture Congress in Mexico City on Friday.
Shooting is set to begin early 2009 for 2010 release.
Mexican director Pedro Pablo Ybarra will helm pic from a script by Argentina's Aida Bortnik.
“Noticias” producer creds go to Carlos Payan, Epigmenio Ibarra and Tania Zarak.
According to Zarak, Spanish mini-major Filmax Entertainment and media giant Grupo Prisa are expressing interest in the project. “It is a very ambitious project that brings together the best of Latin America's film world,” said Zarak.
