Hollywood: As Geographical, Cultural and Mythic Site

All major cities bear with them meanings that are associated with their beginnings.

The scent of Hollywood has always evoked the Gold Rush, to the point where even stories of greed, corruption and tragedy–and there were plenty of all of those–have been romanticized and woven into the above myths.

As for the film industry, one of the most prevalent myths is that all you need is “one lucky break,” that success is only a matter of chance–being the right person at the right place at the right time.

Movie stardom is very much based on those ideas.

The notion of odds against success, the millions of routine failures (which necessarily outnumber the cases of success) is also adding to the city’s allure and lustre.
