Golden Tomato Awards 2018: Black Panther and Roma

Rotten Tomatoes has announced its winners for the 2018 Golden Tomato Awards, honoring the movies that earned the most critical acclaim throughout last year.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, which should become the first superhero blockbuster to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, topped the Wide Release category by earning an incredible 97% from 447 reviews.

Roma, from Mexican-born writer-director Alfonso Cuaron (already an Oscar winner for Gravity), which should also get Best Picture nomination, placed first in the Limited Release category with a 96% from 312 reviews.

Black Panther, a big-budget, star-driven, special effects blockbuster, and Roma, a personal, black an white intimate drama (albeit on epic scale) represents the two poles of the film continuum equations.

The winners for the Golden Tomato Awards are based not just on the score of each film but also on the amount of reviews counted.

Debra Granik’s Sundance drama Leave No Trace earned a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, but it is based on only 207 reviews, compared to “Roma” earning an overall score lower but from a higher volume of reviews counted.
