Oscar Roles: Page, Geraldine–Woody Allen’s Interiors

In Woody Allen’s melodrama, Interiors, Geraldine Page plays Eve, a middle-aged interior decorator, married to a wealthy lawyer and mother of three grown-up daughters: a successful poet, a film actress, and one that’s vocationally unsettled.

When her husband leaves her and reconciliation seems dim, she attempts suicide. Undeterred, the husband divorces her and marries another, more cheerful (Jewish) woman, Pearl (Maureen Stapleton).

In one of many arguments, the youngest daughters who lives with her, charges: “There’s a perversenss and willfulness of attitude in many of your actions.”

On her ex-husband’s wedding day, in the family beach house, Eve downs herself in the ocean
