In 1965, the Best Foreign Language Film went to the Italian comedy, “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. The winner of the Original Screenplay was Frederic Raphael for the British film “Darling,” directed by John Schlesinger. Maurice Jarre won the Original Score for David Lean's “Doctor Zhivago,” and Irwin Kostal the Adapted Score Oscar for “The Sound of Music,” which also won Best Picture. The Song Oscar went to Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis for “The Shadow of Your Smile,” in Minnelli's melodrama, “The Sandpiper,” starring Richard Burton and Liz Taylor.
