Oscar: Douglas, Kirk in The Detective Story

Some films have earned nominations for several of their players, but excluded the one or two who truly deserved to be nominated. Eleanor Parker and Lee Grant were nominated for Detective Story, but Kirk Douglas failed to in one of his best roles, as the obsessively righteous detective.

Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones earned awards for Elmer Gantry, but Jean Simmons, who played a devout evangelist, was conspicuously omitted. Spencer Tracy received a nomination for the courtroom drama, Inherit the Wind, but co?star Fredric March did not.

Greer Garson was nominated for playing Eleanor Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello, but Ralph Bellamy, who re?created his Tony Award?winning role as President Roosevelt, failed to win a nod from the Academy
