Some actors are Oscar nominated for roles in which they were cast against type.

Take, Sissy Spacek’s sixth (and latest) Best Actress Oscar nomination in Todd Field’s In the Bedroom: the actress has usually played down to earth, often country girls-women (her Oscar winning role in the 1980’s Coal Miner’s Daughter.

But in the 2001 drama, she plays Ruth, a rigid, firm, controlled New England wife, determined to take matters (and the law) in her hands.
