The Austin Film Critics Association today announced its 2011 awards, with Martin Scorsese’s ode to classic cinema, ”Hugo,” winning best film and Nicolas Winding Refn earning best director for ”Drive.”
In a year in which the critics prizes have been spread out among a host of Oscar contenders, the Austin announcement seemed to highlight a few categories that continue to dominate, including Albert Brooks for his supporting role in ”Drive” and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki for ”The Tree of Life.” Both contenders have swept the critics awards almost across the board.
In the acting categories, best actor Michael Shannon and best supporting actress Jessica Chastain were honored for their roles in ”Take Shelter.” Tilda Swinton was named best actress for ”We Need to Talk About Kevin.”
Chastain, who has appeared in six films during 2011, was also given the Robert R. ”Bobby” McCurdy Memorial Breakthrough Artist Award.
