Oscar 2007: Akin’s Edge of Heaven Wins Germany’s Lola Awards

April 26, 2008–Fatih Akins drama The Edge of Heaven took the top Lolas at the 58th German Film Awards Friday, including best picture, director and screenplay, beating the favorite Cherry Blossoms, which won three prizes. Edge of Heaven, a Turkish-German production about two deaths that bring strangers together, also received a Lola for editing.

Nina Hoss, who received the Silver Bear for actress at the Berlinale last year, won again for her role as a businesswoman in Christian Petzolds drama Yella.

Elmar Wepper took best actor for his role as a grieving widower in Doris Doerries Cherry Blossoms.

Christine Schorn won supporting actress for her role in Franziska Meletzkys serio comedy Frei nach Plan, while Frederick Lau took supporting actor for The Wave.

Bettina Bluemners Pool of Princesses, a portrait of three girls living in Berlins multicultural Kreuzberg district, took Lola for best docu. Armin Voelckers Leroy, about an Afro-German teen who falls in love with girl from a right-wing family, won the children and youth film Lola.

The event took place at Berlins Palais am Funkturm. Presented by the federal culture ministry, with head Bernd Neumann in attendance, the Lolas are handed out in 15 categories and carry $4.4 million in prizes. The winners were chosen by the German Film Academys members.
