In the sixth year of the new competitive category of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the winner was again a film by Swedish Ingmar Bergman, Through a Glass Darkly.
The New York Film Critics Circle honored the Italian film, La Dolce Vita, by Fellini, with its top honor for foreign films.
The five nominees were:
Through a Glass Darkly, Sweden (winner)
Harry and the Butler, Denmark
Immortal Love, Japan
The Important Man, Mexico
Placido, Spain
