Tyler Perry' s Madea Goes to Jail: Commercial Hit

Feb 21, 2009–Tyler Perry' s “Madea Goes to Jail” grossed $14.7 million, making it the second highest opening day for Lionsgate and the top opening day ever for Perry.  “Madea” final three-day gross could rival the $33.6 million opening weekend of 2006's “Saw III,” Lionsgate” top bow.

Playing at 2,032 venues, “Madea”'s first day ranks just below the $14.76 million of 2007's 'Saw IV,” which holds the opening day record for Lionsgate.

“Madea” is the seventh film that Perry has directed. In 2006, “Madea's Family Reunion” marked Perry's previous box-office high with a $10.5 million Friday and a $30 million weekend.
