Twilight: Midnight Screenings Sold Out

Nov 21, 2008–The erotic vampire movie “Twilight” grossed more than $7 million in Thursday midnight shows, ahead of the $2.5 million earned by “Sex and the City' in its opening midnight runs.

“Twilight” could exceed initial forecasts for a $50 million to $60 million opening weekend. ¬ìSex and the City¬î opened to $57 million in May.

Females, specifically tween teenage girls, are driving “Twilight,” based on the best-selling books series by Stephenie Meyer about a teen vampire romance. But it's not just younger women turning out; older women and teen boys, too.

“Twilight” is a victory for Summit, which grabbed the property after several other shops passed, including MTV Films.

No doubt it will become a franchise for Summit: There are four books in Meyer’s series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide, including $8.2 million in the U.S.
