Among previous R-rated comedy bows in August, Superbads success is in tune with the $12.2 million of 2003s American Wedding on its first Friday, and bests the $7 million posted by Judd Apatows 2005 debut The 40 Year-Old Virgin. At $16.5 million, 2001s American Pie 2 holds the Friday record for an R-rated August comedy.
Rush Hour 3 slowed in its second Friday with $6.4 million from 3,778 theaters, off 66% from a week ago.
Paul Greengrass's The Bourne Ultimatum took third with an estimated $5.6 million from 3,701 venues.
As expected, the Nicole KidmanDaniel Craig sci-fi thriller remake, The Invasion, failed, placing fourth with $2 million off 2,776.
The Simpsons Movie rounded out fifth with $1.9 million from 3,162 playdates.
Among other fresh entries, the Weinstein Companys The Last Legion made an estimated $871,000 at 2,002 theaters, while Frank Ozs British comedy Death at a Funeral grossed $341,000 at 260 engagements.
