Two weeks before the 2015 Sundance Film Fest begins, Fox Searchlight has acquired worldwide rights Noah Baumbach’s comedy “Mistress America,” starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke.
The film will have its world premiere at Sundance and be released at the end of January.
Baumbach directed from a script he co-wrote with Gerwig. The film is produced by Baumbach, Scott Rudin, Lila Yacoub, Rodrigo Teixera and Gerwig.
Kirke portrays a lonely college freshman in New York, who is not having an exciting university experience or the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. She’s rescued from her disappointment by her soon-to-be stepsister, an adventurous resident of Times Square portrayed by Gerwig.
The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight’s Tony Safford, Megan O’Brien and Ray Strache with the UTA Independent Film Group, which represented the filmmakers and arranged the film’s financing.
RT Features helped develop, produce and finance “Frances Ha,” which starred Gerwig and was directed by Baumbach. It also produced Ira Sachs’ “Love Is Strange,” is developing a James Gray project and announced a venture last year with Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Prods., launching a fund to finance and produce projects by emerging filmmakers.
