Safdie, who recently boarded the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, will play Margaret’s father, Herb. The film now in production is written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, who is re-teaming with James L. Brooks and his Gracie Films banner for the project. They collaborated on the film The Edge of Seventeen.

Ant-Man star Abby Ryder Fortson was cast to play Margaret Simon and Rachel McAdams was tapped as her mother, Barbara, in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. And Kathy Bates is to play Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia.

Blume’s novel, first published in 1970, tells a coming-of-age story about Margaret Simon, a sixth grader who is questioning everything about adolescence and puberty, and is searching the universe for whatever answers she can find. With her mother and grandmother trying to guide her through a time when everything is changing, they too find that you never stop questioning your path and defining what is meaningful in your life.

Safdie also appears in Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film opposite Bradley Cooper, and in Showtime’s TV series The Curse, with Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder. He recently starred in the feature Pieces of a Woman.

As a writer-director, his most recent film, Uncut Gems, starred Adam Sandler and earned $50 million at the box office.
