Ricki and the Flash: Mixed Reviews, Commercial Disappointment

Sony’s Ricki and the Flash, directed by Jonathan Demme, got off to a slower start, grossing $6.5 million from 1,603 theaters.

The film stars Meryl Streep as an aging rocker re-connecting with her estranged family.

There were hopes that the picture would appeal to older crowds (Streep’s fan base) and gradually build its audience, but that does not seem to be the case.

One of the worst Demme-reviewed film, Ricki and the Flash has a 59 percent approval rate on RottenTomatoes, which means that 2 out of every 5 reviews have been negative.

Our grade: B- (** out of *****).

Word of mouth on the film has also been mixed.

Like other indie and serious directors, Demme dpends on strong reviews.

With a budget of $18 million to produce, Ricki and the Flash is the first release from the rebooted Tri-Star, the label Tom Rothman was overseeing before he became head of Sony Pictures.
