The Irishman has been named best film of 2019 by the New York Film Critics Circle. Martin Scorsese’s epic mob drama, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, also earned a supporting actor win for Joe Pesci.
Best director went to Benny and Josh Safdie for “Uncut Gems,” starring Adam Sandler.
“I Lost My Body,” a French film from Cannes Festival, won for animation.
In acting categories, top prizes went to Antonio Banderas for “Pain and Glory,” directed by Almodovar, and Lupita Nyong’o for “Us.”
Laura Dern was awarded best supporting actress for two films “Marriage Story” (Netflix) and “Little Women,” directed by Greta Gerwig.
Last year, “Roma” was named best film with Alfonso Cuarón taking the top directing prize and best cinematography.
Past prize winners have included “Lady Bird,” “La La Land,” “Carol,” “Boyhood” and “American Hustle.”
The New York Film Critics Circle, founded by Wanda Hale of the New York Daily News, has been handing out superlatives since 1935.
The 85th ceremony will be held January 7, 2020 at the New York Film Critics’ annual gala.
