Oscar 2019: Best Supporting Actor–Predictions

No matter which nine or ten films will be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, there will be greater diversity and inclusion this year than ever before.

If you want to know more about the Oscars, please consult my book, All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards (hardcover and paperback).

FRONTRUNNERS (in alphabetical order)

Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy

Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman

Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns

Sam Rockwell, Vice

Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born

Robert Forster. What They Had

Michael B. Jordan, Black Panther

Paul Giamatti, Private Life

Brian Tyree Henry, If Beale Street Could Talk

Nicholas Hoult, The Favourite

John Krasinski, A Quiet Place

Of the 15 actors on my list of Best Supporting Actor Oscar contenders, about half have been nominated before, and two have actually won the Oscar: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

Timothee Chalamet, who should score a supporting nod Beautiful Boy, is now the most brilliant and versatile actor of his generation; last year, he won Best Actor from our group, L.A. Film Critics Association and was nominated for Best Actor for Call Me By Your name.
